Taliban capture key Kandahar district, Afghan forces flee to Tajikistan: Report
The fall of the Panjwai district in Kandahar reportedly sent scores of families fleeing from the area as the extremist group aims to impose a harsh version of Islamic sharia law.
The Taliban have captured a key district in their former stronghold of the Kandahar province after fierce fighting with government forces in Afghanistan, news agencies reported on Sunday. The group captured the Panjwai district in the southern province of Kandahar just two days after the US-allied forces withdrew from Bagram Air Base near Kabul.
Panjwai district has been the Taliban’s target for a long time, given its proximity to Kandahar city. The fall of the Panjwai district reportedly sent scores of families fleeing from the area as the extremist group aims to impose a harsh version of Islamic sharia law, which it calls “genuine Islamic system”.
“The Taliban have captured the district police headquarters and governor’s office building,” Panjwai district governor Hasti Mohammad said Afghan forces told news agency AFP.
The Taliban insurgents have made massive strides throughout the country after US troops began to pull out following President Joe Biden’s announcement in April. The final phase of US troop withdrawal has provided a fillip to the Taliban’s campaign to capture territories across Afghanistan’s rural areas.
After Panjwai fell to the Taliban, Kandahar provincial council head accused the government forces, weakened due to US troops’ pull out, of “intentionally withdrawing” from the battlefield. The Taliban now control around 100 out of all 421 districts and district centres in Afghanistan, with Panjwai being the fifth district in Kandahar to fall to the group in recent weeks.
There have also been reports of Afghan forces fleeing across the northern border into Tajikistan. Tajikistan’s State Committee for National Security said in a statement that more than 300 Afghan government troops crossed over the border at about 6:30pm local time on Saturday. They were allowed into the country “[g]uided by the principles of humanism and good neighborliness,” the Tajik authorities said.

Taliban take districts in northern Afghanistan from fleeing troops
By Press Trust of India
Kabul: The Taliban’s march through northern Afghanistan gained momentum overnight with the capture of several districts from fleeing Afghan forces, several hundred of whom fled across the border into Tajikistan, officials said Sunday.
More than 300 Afghan military personnel crossed from Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province as Taliban fighters advanced toward the border, Tajikistan’s State Committee for National Security said in a statement. The Afghan troops crossed over at about 6:30 pm local time Saturday.
“Guided by the principles of humanism and good neighborliness,” the Tajik authorities allowed the retreating Afghan National Defense and Security Forces to cross into Tajikistan, said the statement.
Since mid-April, when US President Joe Biden announced the end to Afghanistan’s “forever war,” the Taliban have made strides throughout the country. But their most significant gains have been in the northern half of the country, a traditional stronghold of the US-allied warlords who helped defeat them in 2001.
The Taliban now control roughly a third of all 421 districts and district centers in Afghanistan.
The gains in northeastern Badakhshan province in recent days have mostly come to the insurgent movement without a fight, said Mohib-ul Rahman, a provincial council member. He blamed Taliban successes on the poor morale of troops who are mostly outnumbered and without resupplies.
“Unfortunately, the majority of the districts were left to Taliban without any fight,” said Rahman. In the last three days, 10 districts fell to Taliban, eight without a fight, he said.
Hundreds of Afghan army, police and intelligence troops surrendered their military outposts and fled to the Badakhshan provincial capital of Faizabad, said Rahman.
Even as a security meeting was being held early Sunday to plot the strengthening of the perimeter around the capital, some senior provincial officials were leaving Faizabad for the capital Kabul, he said.
In late June the Afghan government resurrected militias with a reputation of brutal violence to support the beleaguered Afghan forces but Rahman said many of the militias in the Badakhshan districts put up only a half-hearted fight.
The areas under Taliban control in the north are increasingly strategic, running along Afghanistan’s border with central Asian states. Last month the religious movement took control of Imam Sahib, a town in Kunduz province opposite Uzbekistan and gained control of a key trade route.
The inroads in Badakhshan are particularly significant as it is the home province of former President Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was killed by a suicide bomber in 2011. His son, Salahuddin Rabbani, is part of the current High Council for National Reconciliation. The slain former president also led Afghanistan’s Jamiat-e-Islami, which was the party of famed anti-Taliban fighter Ahmad Shah Massoud, killed by a suicide bomber two days before the 9/11 attacks in America.
The Interior Ministry issued a statement Saturday saying the defeats were temporary although it was not clear how they would regain control.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the fall of the districts and said most were without a fight. The Taliban in previous surrenders have shown video of Afghan soldiers taking transportation money and returning to their homes.
US troops may not leave Afghanistan, Gen. Miller suggests
A top US military commander has said that the United States should not turn its back on Afghanistan, suggesting that many American troops may not leave the country even after the promised withdrawal.
“I would like us not to just turn our backs on this,” Army Gen. Scott Miller, the top US commander in Afghanistan, said in an interview on Sunday.
“I think there are tremendous lessons. And, you know, they’re not all positives, there’s victories as well. So we will celebrate those within organizations, and really learn from those things that didn’t go as well as they wanted to. You know, an honest self-reflection, that’s going to be important going forward,” he added.
Earlier, the general has warned that the security situation in Afghanistan is “not good” amid American troops withdrawal from the war-torn country.
Miller said the Taliban are taking control of dozens of districts and creating conditions that “won’t look good for Afghanistan in the future if there is a push for a military takeover.”
“The loss of terrain and the rapidity of that loss of terrain has to be concerning,” Miller said last week. “As you watch the Taliban moving across the country, what you don’t want to have happen is that the people lose hope, and they believe they now have a foregone conclusion presented to them.”
At its peak in mid-2011, nearly 100,000 US troops passed through the compound, apart from some 35,000 US contractors, which have now plummeted to 2,500 troops and 18,000 contractors.
The full withdrawal of some 2,500 US troops from the country is expected to complete by mid or late July, ahead of US President Joe Biden’s September 11 deadline.
The US will reportedly leave hundreds of troops in Afghanistan even after the promised withdrawal from the war-torn country.
About 650 American troops are likely to stay in Afghanistan to provide security at the US Embassy after US forces leave the country later this summer, The Associated Press reported last week. Hundreds of more troops will also stay at the Kabul airport.
The US invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 under the pretext of the so-called war against terror.
Washington has spent trillions of dollars waging war on the impoverished country, which has left thousands of Afghan civilians and American soldiers dead.
